Stealing a line from Ian Abreu's recent blog: "Baseball is the universal sports language throughout the American culture." It made me think. Dice-K pitches in his MLB debut on Thursday and that means there is going to be an addition to the term American Culture.
American Culture is going to get a whole new look when Dice-K toes the slab against the Royals and throws his first pitch. The media frenzy will be out of control for this very first game. Ratings for television and listeners for radio will be mulitplied by the millions. This is going to be an historical event in Baseball and American Culture.
Think about it: I know I may potentially skip school for this event and others may also do the same. People from Japan are going to be tuning into to a Kansas City Royals game. Yes, people from Japan are going to be tuning into a Kansas City Royals game. How crazy is that concept! The event of Dice-K pitching will be a world wide addition to American's Culture of Baseball.
As Ian mentioned he hopes to one day tell his children about the "great David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, the bloody sock, Derek Jeter, Ken Griffey JR," and the list goes on." Not mentioned was Daisuke Matsuzaka. He could become an American phenomenon. He already has become a phenomenon of Red Sox Nation.
So this Thursday when you tune into Dice-K's first major league appearance remember this is an historical event not only in Baseball, but also in American Culture as well.
